A Time for War
By Jeff Klick
There is a battle raging for the souls of man. You and I are locked in a struggle for the very existence of our souls. Our enemy is crafty, wily, and very experienced. He has been at it since the beginning of man's history. His tactics have not had to change much because they are so successful. When we entered this life we signed up for the battle. When we were born again we chose to change sides in this conflict. We have picked the winning side, but the battle still rages. Where is this battle you ask? In our minds!
Matthew 15:19 - "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what make a man unclean."
2 Peter 3:1 - "I have written both of my letters to you to stimulate you to wholesome thinking."
Hebrews 4:12 - "For the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any two-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing the soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
2 Corinthians 10:5 - "We take captive every thought to the obedience of Christ..."
Proverbs 23:7 - "As a man thinks in his heart, so he is..."
We will never win the war, or even put up much of a fight, if we do not get our minds under control. All sin, attitudes, and actions begin with a thought. So many of the believers' troubles could be avoided if we had our minds under the control of the Holy Spirit. A. W. Tozer puts it this way; "Keep your mind pure. Clean out the sanctuary the way old Hezekiah did. They had dirtied up that sanctuary so when he had taken over, Hezekiah got all of the priests together. It took them days and days but they carried out all of the filth and burned it, threw it over the bank and got rid of it, and then went back and sanctified the temple. Then the blessed God came and they had their worship again. Our thoughts are the decorations inside the sanctuary where we live. If our thoughts are purified by the blood of Christ, we are living in a clean room, no matter if we are wearing overalls covered with grease. Our thoughts largely decide the mood and weather and climate within our beings, and God considers our thoughts as part of us. They should be thoughts of peace, thoughts of pity, mercy, and kindness, thoughts of charity, thoughts of God and the Son of God - these are pure things, good things and high things."
If you are living a defeated life, the problem is all in your head, literally. Renew your mind with the Scripture. Paul said it this way in the Book of Romans, "Therefore I urge you, brothers, in the view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Our minds can, and must be renewed. We can tear down the lies of the enemy with the truth of Scripture. We must be transformed from the world's way of thinking.
If you are struggling in some area of your thought life, find the solution in the Scripture and hold on to it. Quote it, memorize it, meditate on it, graft that portion of Truth into your being. Believe the truth, not the lie. Philippians 4:8 is a good yardstick to evaluate what you are dwelling on; "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things." If we would obey just this one verse, our minds would begin to be renewed.
Our adversary is very real. He is indeed seeking someone to devour. He is seeking you! However, our weapons are powerful. Our weapons are available. We can overcome the enemy with the weapon of truth. We can pull down his strongholds of error with truth. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 - "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds (false thoughts), casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ."
We will win or lose the battle based on what we do with our thoughts. We have no control over what comes into our minds, but we do have control over what we dwell on. Dwell on thoughts of life, truth, and holiness regardless of your situation. These will give us the victory we desire. Reject every thought that does not line up with the Truth. Do not put yourself into a situation where you will be defeated. Reject every thought that pulls you away from our wonderful Lord Jesus. Get your mind renewed daily and defeat the enemy at his own game!
