Child Training Highlights (Part 1)

By Jeff Klick

We'd like to make available to everyone a short summary of our Wednesday night meeting. We understand that everyone can not attend, so we'd like to share the rich insights that are covered in the Word and expounded on by Mr. Fugate in his book, "What The Bible Says About Child Training." Below are a few of the highlights of the evening....

  1. Parents have the God-given right to rule over the will of their children. This right is not based on the parents deserving it or being good enough to merit it, but rather on the Biblical commandments of the Word of God. These first three chapters reveal that the objective is much more than child training, it is parent training! Parents must be informed on what is expected, required, and available to them, as the one's responsible for training the next generation.

  2. The second foundation truth in the child training process, which could be considered the "key" to all training, is that we must teach our children to be respectful. Training requires that our teaching is accepted and children will never accept instruction until they honor our authority. Honoring means to have great respect for someone and to revere him or her. Our children are commanded to honor their parents. This will not come naturally. We must instruct and train them in this area. We must never allow or accept disrespect in any form from our children.

  3. God holds us responsible for instilling this respect into our children. Children are commanded to do it, but we are the ones who must teach them how to do it. We have the right to rule because God gave it to us, not because we deserve it or merit it. This is a key concept!

  4. Our society is crumbling due to the fact that disrespect for authority is allowed. Children are not learning respect for their parents at home, and this carries over into all other areas of life. Children, who are allowed to be disrespectful to their parents in words or actions, will believe that it is okay to be disrespectful to other authorities as well, including police, political offices, and ultimately, God. We must instill this basic building block back into our families if we are to have any hope of surviving as a nation.

  5. A question was asked about what are the top five reasons that young people rebel. Here were mine -

    1. Hypocrisy in the home.
    2. Secular music including Christian Contemporary Music as a doorway to evil.
    3. Wrong friends.
    4. Lack of parental involvement and supervision.
    5. Too many sports and activities that rob family time and promote wrong attitudes like ego and exclusiveness.
