How Should a Christian "Dress"?
By Jeff Klick
The Bible is very specific on how a Christian should dress. I'm not writing about how we clothe our bodies, but how we clothe our inner man.
1 Peter 5:5 - "All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."
Colossians 3:12-14 - "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on (clothe) love, which binds them all together in perfect unity."
Ephesians 4:22-24 - "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off (unclothe) your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on (clothe) the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."
Ephesians 6:11 - "Put on (clothe) the full armor of God..."
We have a free will. We can decide how we want to dress. We will decide what type of "clothing" our inner man wears. Will we be clothed with humility, kindness, compassion, gentleness, patience, and love, or something else? What will people "see" when they spend time with us? What will people remember from spending time with us? What "fragrance" will people remember when our time with them is through?
2 Corinthians 2:14-16 - "But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life.
People remember what we look like, "smell like," and sound like. Our lives should be a reflection of Christ. Our words and actions should create a hunger and thirst for Christ in those we come in contact with. We need the grace of God to help us obey Him and to do His will, Our desire must always be to be pleasing to our Lord in everything we say and do.
As we pray and seek the Lord about how to get "dressed" each day, ask Him to help you pick out the right clothes. For example, the garment of praise, the belt of truth, and the overcoat of love. Try picking one area that you lack the most, and focus on that one for a week. If compassion is lacking, ask God to help you put on (clothe) a heart of compassion towards someone that day. Ask God to bring someone into your life that you could show compassion to.
I've learned that most of the time God provides the opportunities to demonstrate these qualities within the walls of our own homes. Ask God to give you eyes to see how to get 9'dressed" properly at home first. God has placed within your sphere of influence everyone needed to help you mature in your dressing habits. You can choose what you wear each day, pick wisely!
